Faculty Updates

Good evening All,

Thank you all for your continued patience and diligence in helping us develop plans for the continuity of instruction and student and learning services in this constantly shifting environment. And a special thank you to those who have been flexible in finding a way this week to unexpectedly and urgently transition your traditional on-ground classes online.

As President Board’s email tonight indicates, the circumstances are now such that the college will be transitioning everyone to remote work as of Monday, March 23rd. In this respect, Cerro Coso Community College is following the lead of larger institutions who have been dealing with the virus in their own communities for several days now. It follows transitioning instruction online and limiting non-essential group gatherings.

What this means for you and your students:

  • Starting Monday, March 23rd, all campuses will be largely closed to students and entirely closed to the public. Exceptions are students using the open labs (more on that below) and students attending labs that could not be transitioned online. On-ground students will access their classes and then leave immediately when class is over. The deans have worked extensively with the faculty and the faculty chairs in these areas to fulfill course objectives while meeting group-gathering guidelines
  • Student support services of counselingadvisingadmissions and records, and financial aid will be unavailable on Monday, March 23rd and Tuesday, March 24th so that everyone in those offices can be set up with the technology necessary to work remotely.
  • All college student and learning support services are going online. This means counseling, advising, financial aid, admissions and records, library, and tutoring will now be done remotely. Most office phones will be set to ring through to employees, and employees will be working regular posted hours. So continue to encourage students to call the numbers or use the contact forms on the website for the services they need. In the next day or two, students will be receiving specific guidance on accessing these resources.
  • The learning support services of library and tutoring are already transitioned online and ready for inquiries from you and your students.
  • We regret to say that on-campus proctoring services will no longer be available.
  • On Wednesday, March 25th, those services will open back up to begin serving students at a distance.
  • On Monday, March 23rd, instruction that was closed to students to facilitate the transition online during the week of March 16th-20th will reopen in the remote environment.
  • Open computer lab space is being established at Ridgecrest, Bishop, Mammoth, Lake Isabella, and Tehachapi. These are intended for students who do not have internet service or computers at home and meant purely to provide access. Work stations are being set up at least 6 feet apart from each other, and keyboards and mice will be disinfected after each use. These are the hours for March 23rd-27th:
    • Ridgecrest: Monday through Thursday 10 am to 4 pm
    • Bishop and Mammoth: Monday through Thursday 10 am to 4 pm
    • Lake Isabella: Tuesday and Thursday 10 am to 3 pm
    • Tehachapi: Wednesday 9 am to 3 pm
  • The Child Development Centers remain open
  • The Print Shop remains open and Maintenance and Operations and Safety and Security will still be on campus
  • Online classes will continue as scheduled
  • Incarcerated Student Education Program instructors have been communicated with and are preparing to deliver instruction in correspondence mode.

Communications are planned to go out to students tomorrow to inform them of the above and to provide resources during this time. Communications have gone out to student services personnel about the closure to students March 23rd and 24th.

Finally, to reiterate what President Board said in her email: know that these actions are grounded in keeping you and others as safe from the possibility of contracting the coronavirus, and also as time goes by conditions could change and we will need to address yet other circumstances. Some current resources available on the website are:

You will continue to receive emails and updates. Monitor your mailbox for messages with the “COVID-19” subject line. As always and now more than ever, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Vice President of Instruction

This is guidance specific to meetings and events.

Our previous activity, event and meeting guidance was related primarily to student events or student involved events. As a result of questions and continuing developments, this guidance relates to any college group gatherings or meetings- including entirely internal meetings.

  1. Generally, whenever possible any meeting should be held using technology- Zoom, CCC Confer, phone, etc.
    1. Meetings of less than 10 can be conducted as long as the required 6 feet of physical distance can be maintained.
    2. Meetings of 10 or more can ONLY be conducted via technology.

Please apply this immediately. If you have meetings scheduled that will be conducted in person, please ensure you have fewer than 10 participants and that you are scheduled in a space allowing for 6 feet of physical distance. Please let me know if you have a any questions.

This is guidance specific to travel with students.

Effective immediately, please cancel all travel that involves students, regardless of activity or destination. This guidance refers to any planned or expected travel through the end of the spring semester. I know that this is disappointing and unfortunate, but we have to primarily consider safety precaution for our employees and students. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Take care,

As recommended in the November 2018 College Council meeting, a task force was called together to discuss what should be displayed throughout the main building at the Ridgecrest campus and in what manner the information should be displayed. The task force was not identifying specific locations for displaying things or identifying specific products for those displays. Membership on the task force included representatives from Student Government, Classified Staff, Faculty, and Administration.

The task force met throughout spring 2019. Below you will find some “conceptual” images based on the recommendations of the task force. They are not intended to be accurate or definitive, merely a way of investigating and communicating design principles and aesthetic concepts. Your input would be appreciated. We have provided a comment box below the image carousel.

On Tuesday, March 17th the Core Ensemble will perform the chamber music theatre work Ain’t I a Woman! in the Cerro Coso Lecture Center at 6:30 p.m.

Chamber Music Theatre is unique performance format developed by the Core Ensemble featuring a marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance.

Shinnerrie Jackson portrays multiple characters while interacting with the onstage musical trio of cello, piano and percussion of Byron Sean.

Ain’t I a Woman! celebrates the life and times of four powerful African American women: renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and fiery abolitionist Sojourner Truth, exuberant folk artist Clementine Hunter, and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age, and contemporary concert music by African Americans.  Ain’t I a Woman! is a joyful exploration of the trials and triumphs of  four passionate and accomplished women.

Since 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured in every region of the United States and internationally to Australia, England, Russia, Ukraine, and the British Virgin Islands. The Core Ensemble has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, The Palm Beach County Cultural Council and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music,

In celebration of Women’s History Month the performance is FREE and open to the public.  Parking will not be enforced during the event.

Contact the Public Relations Department at 760-384-6262 for more information.

Foundation Seeks to Make Promise Program Sustainable and More Robust

On Thursday, March 5, 2020, the Cerro Coso Community College (CCCC) Foundation will host a President’s Circle brunch from 9 to 10 a.m. in the College Community Room located on the third floor of the Main Building.

Guests will be given an opportunity to hear first-hand from Cerro Coso student leaders showcasing their extraordinary work.

The President’s Circle ensures and expands the College’s ability to advance education opportunities for future leaders. The CCCC Foundation is active in many areas and always pursuing new partnerships, its main focus is making the Cerro Coso Promise Scholarship Program sustainable and more robust. Launched in 2018, the Cerro Coso Promise Scholarship offers qualified full-time students the opportunity to receive $1,000 per semester for 2 years to help with tuition, books, and fees regardless of household income. “When a student attends community college only part time their chance of completing is 19%. If they attend full time their chances are 61%,” said President Jill Board. “This scholarship is intended to encourage full-time enrollment and to offset costs so students can graduate within the 2 years with little to no debt.”

The President’s Circle is the CCCC Foundation’s annual giving leadership society.  With a gift of $1,000 or more, members make a powerful statement about the value of a community college education by directly supporting students in the Cerro Coso Promise Program. Membership in the President’s Circle sends a positive message to the community and inspires others to follow the lead of its members.

“Perhaps you recently hired one of our graduates to work in your business, taken a community education class, or you are one of our many alums and friends that have enjoyed attending CCCC performances or athletic events. Regardless of your affiliation with Cerro Coso, you are invited to become a member of the President’s Circle,” said Board. Donors to the President’s Circle share a deep appreciation for the role that the college and its graduates have played in shaping the community and the region. “These alumni, friends, business, and community leaders provide crucial support to the college and our students,” concluded Board.

President’s Circle members are given special recognition and sponsorship in various campus activities. Members are also invited to special college events that showcase the impact of their annual gift, like the President’s Circle brunch.

Please RSVP to Amber Reed at 760-384-6262 to reserve your spot at the President’s Circle brunch. Parking will not be enforced during the event.
