The Cerro Coso Athletic Department is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Andrew Cole to take the reins of Cerro Coso Women's Volleyball.  Following an extensive search to fill the position, the Coyotes are excited to bring in a volleyball coach with the extensive knowledge of the sport that Coach Cole will provide. Cole is replacing long-time Head Coach, Kim Young, who has stepped down from the position earlier this spring. Coach Young has been at the helm since the program was reinstated in 2014, during which time she was able to build a program that showed continued improvement leading into the COVID-19 year. Coach Cole will now be charged with putting the program back on track and leading the Coyotes into the future.

An experienced volleyball coach, Mr. Cole joined the Ohio State University (OSU) Final Four Team in 2005. Upon reaching graduate school, Mr. Cole had the opportunity to serve as a graduate assistant coach for the Loyola-Chicago women's volleyball program between 2007 to 2008, where he oversaw student progress and became well versed in scouting reports and other tasks. He also started as a Middle School volleyball coach at Glen Hills Middle School.

Having continually progressed in the field of athletics over the subsequent course of his career, Mr. Cole went on to work as an assistant coach for the Rote Raben Professional Volleyball Club in Germany, where he helped lead the team to third place at the Under 20 German National Championships. He also served as interim head coach for a month while the head coach lead the German Youth National Team. After departing from this role, he maintained involvement as the head coach for the Boys Select and Youth Continental Team for USA Volleyball at the USA High Performance Championships. Mr. Cole also highlighted his expertise as the assistant coach for the Lewis University Flyers women's volleyball program in Illinois, which he helped lead to victory in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament and place 14th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) ranking. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for the Northwood University Timberwolves in Michigan, which held a record of 21 wins and 11 losses.

In 2015, Mr. Cole was recruited by the University of Milwaukee Panthers as an assistant where he served until being promoted to technical coordinator from 2019 to 2021. Adjacent to his ongoing assignments, he has been highly engaged with a multitude of sports camps for area colleges and universities, including Marquette University, Nebraska University, the Ohio State University, and many others. Looking toward the future, he aspires to soon earn the role of a head coach at a major university.

Mr. Cole initially took an interest in the sport of volleyball while coming of age. He was a member of the Youth Training Team and USA Junior National Team prior to attending college. At the same time, he was the 2002 State Long Jump Champion with a jump of 7.21 meters ( for perspective, the 39th competitor of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens recorded a jump of 7.32 meters, a difference of 4.5 inches). Mr. Cole then attended OSU and earned a bachelor's degree in finance in 2006. Playing in collegiate sports during his undergraduate years, he served as a co-captain, represented the team on its student athlete advisory board, and was named as the MIVA Freshman of the Year for 2003. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Cole graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a Master of Business Administration in sports management.

To support his profession, Mr. Cole is a prominent member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He is also a former member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Honoring his accomplishments thus far, Mr. Cole was notably recognized among the Top 30 Under 30 list by the AVCA in 2011 and is a 2017 inductee of the Nicolet High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Please help us in welcoming Coach Cole to the Coyote family. #MakeYourMark!

Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

As the fall semester wound down, Cerro Coso held a Vocational Nursing Capping and Pinning Ceremony on Friday, December 3, symbolically welcoming 7 student vocational nurses into a profession of service to others (pending passage of state boards.)

The path to becoming a nurse is long, steep, and sometimes rocky. The whole experience of being a nursing major is often an emotional roller-coaster. They cry together, laugh together, and share their stories with each other. But at the end of the day, they know the nursing profession is exactly what they were meant to do.

The Nursing Pinning and Capping Ceremonies signify the end of a rigorous and physically demanding program of study. Students, family, friends, faculty, and staff enjoyed the solemn, joyful, and at times humorous ceremonies as instructors and graduates shared their thoughts and memories of the 18-month journey that was being completed. These students will have the opportunity to make an enormous, positive difference in the lives of people under their care.

“These nursing graduates are heading into unprecedented challenges with the global pandemic,” said Matt Wanta, Program Director. “They will not only be the front line of care, but they will also often be the only connection patients have with their families. The challenges over the last two years have been immense, and it takes a very special person to serve the needs of the community in times like this. These graduates have shown us how they take on these challenges and become the nursing warriors the world needs today.”

Nursing students honored were: Intissar Awad, Ladaija Denise Baker, Magdelena Christina Marie GoodarziRad, Jesseca Renee Ledet, Lakana Panergo, Anna Louise Rivera, and Kacey Lee Sonnenberg.

The capping and pinning ceremony signifies the official initiation into the brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses. It is a proud moment for the students as they are welcomed into the nursing profession.

The next step for these students is to take the Nursing Certification Licensing Exam (NCLEX), and upon passage, the graduates will have earned the credential of Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN).

Wanta challenged the college’s newest nursing graduates to become advocates for health care at the conclusion of the ceremony. “Go forth and use the education you’ve received at Cerro Coso to not only provide compassionate and skilled care to patients and families but to also give voice to health-care needs in the community.”

“We are very proud of each of these students and the faculty committed to their success,” said President Sean Hancock.

It was the perfect way to complete a semester of hard work and dedication.

Nursing…the hardest job you’ll ever love.

Put yourself ahead of the crowd with Cerro Coso’s new Spanish Language Program!

Cerro Coso Community College is offering a new Spanish Associate of Arts Transfer degree (A.A.-T). The A.A.-T degree offers students the opportunity to complete a two-year degree with course credits that allow them to transfer as a junior to designated Spanish bachelor’s degree programs at California State universities and gives priority admission consideration to the local CSU campus or to a program that is deemed similar to the community college major.

The Spanish AA-T degree offers two tracks to choose from one for Non-Heritage Speakers and another for Heritage Speakers both, guarantee acceptance to the CSU system. This priority does not guarantee admission to specific majors or campuses.

This program of study prepares students for transfer to the CSU system to earn a baccalaureate in Spanish language, linguistics, literature, culture, and translation. Provides students with a strong foundation in fundamental language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) and a better understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

The Associate of Arts in Spanish for Transfer degree also serves as supplementary preparation for diverse professional fields such as healthcare, the legal system, social work, business, customer service, public relations, journalism, hospitality, travel industry, bilingual education, translation and interpretation, and non-profit organizations. “Employers are seeking marketable skills that help them expand their reach and students can be a leader with an AA-T degree in Spanish,” said Spanish Professor Lucila Gonzalez-Cirre.

Experienced instructors lead students to a valuable level of proficiency and cultural understanding in a stimulating and supportive environment. Learning is enhanced through a communicative approach, multimedia technology, and enriched by the International and Latino clubs at the college.
