CHAMBER MUSIC THEATER WORK

CELEBRATING HARLEM RENAISSANCE

In Celebration of Black History Month, Cerro Coso Community College is hosting a Core Ensemble performance virtually of the chamber music theater work, Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at 6 pm.

Chamber Music Theatre is a unique performance format created by the Core Ensemble, featuring a marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance.

Dracyn Blount portrays multiple characters while interacting with the onstage musical trio of cello, piano and percussion.

Celebrating the music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance era in New York City, Of Ebony Embers examines the lives of three outstanding but very different African American poets - Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay - as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas

The script was written by Akin Babatunde and the show is also directed by Mr. Babatunde.

The Core Ensemble performs music by African American composers ranging from jazz greats Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus to concert music composers Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.

Since 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured nationally to every region of the United States and internationally to England, Russia, the Ukraine, Australia and the British Virgin Islands. The Ensemble was the recipient of the 2000 Eugene McDermott Award for Excellence in the Arts awarded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has received support from the State of Florida Department of Cultural Affairs, New England Foundation for the Arts, Palm Beach County Cultural Council, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and the Virgil Thomson Foundation.

The event is FREE.  Participants must pre-register to attend at www.cerrocoso.edu.

The Kern Community College District App for Campus Pass is one of many virus mitigation tools Cerro Coso Community College will use to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning Monday, February 1, 2021 anyone coming to any of the Cerro Coso campuses for more than 15 minutes will be required to download the Kern Community College District App, complete a daily screening survey, and get a daily Campus Pass prior to arrival.  If they receive a green Campus Pass they are welcome to come to campus.  A red Campus Pass means don’t come to campus and wait for a call from the college for more information.

Those with a green Campus Pass must then use the KCCD App to scan into buildings and/or offices using the QR code posted on entrances.

To help effectively contact trace any positive cases on campus, the college asks all students, personnel, and community members to check in when they enter classrooms, offices, sit at community tables, or visit other communal spaces for more than 15 minutes.  This allows the college to contact trace.  Cerro Coso health officials may use the information gathered to determine if people have been exposed and should take action such as being tested or self-isolating.

The Kern Community College District App is available for FREE in the Apple or Google Play store.

Health and safety is a priority for Cerro Coso.  Anyone displaying symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, or muscle pain, or new loss of taste or smell are encourage to stay home and contact their healthcare provider.  Please utilize the new KCCD Campus Pass App and complete the Daily Screening Survey to get a daily Campus Pass to be displayed to teachers and administrators when coming to campus.  Use the App to scan into buildings and offices using the QR code posted.  Other safety protocols include wearing a face-covering and maintain 6 feet social distancing at all times.  Wash your hands and disinfect your area before and after use.

Please note, the Campus Pass App only needs to be used prior to coming on any Cerro Coso campus.  The college is looking forward to the safe return of in-person instruction and activities on its campuses that prioritize health and safety for all.  All campuses are currently closed with only a few workforce development classes taking place in-person.  Cerro Coso will continue to comply with new state and federal regulations as they are released.

Cerro Coso Moves to New Location in Lake Isabella

Cerro Coso Community College in Lake Isabella has completed its move to their new facility located at 6504 Lake Isabella Blvd., (across from the Post Office) in Lake Isabella.

The college announced on Tuesday, September 28, 2020 its intent to restructure services to area residents.

The new location offers a more modern look in a smaller space for Cerro Coso to provide educational assistance for its robust distance education programs.

Dr. Corey Marvin Vice President of Instruction said, “we want to provide our students with as stable as possible education during these times of uncertainty. Restructuring our services was a necessity to preserve college opportunities for future generations of valley residents and Cerro Coso students.”

Thanks to technology supported by the new location, getting an education will be easier than ever. Cerro Coso has been a pioneer in distance education since 1997, the first community college in the state to offer an entire degree online, and offers the ability for students to take classes in a variety of modalities including scheduled Zoom, hybrids, and fully online courses. This gave the college an advantage when all colleges were forced to move their classes to remote delivery during the spring 2020 semester due to COVID-19.  Last fall, over 120 KRV students took distance education classes with Cerro Coso. These students averaged over 2 classes each, noted Marvin, as they make progress toward their educational goals.

The college has also implemented a number of strategies to assist students with laptop loans and remote delivery services for counseling, tutoring, financial aid, library, Access Programs, student engagement, and more.

Registration for spring 2021 classes that begin January 18, 2021 is currently underway.  In addition to a new location the college has a new telephone number.  Give them a call today at 760-384-6395.

New Year.  New location.  Endless possibilities.

The Cerro Coso Community College Foundation announced the latest addition to its growing scholarship program that will further the mission of the organization.  The Kerncrest Audubon Society had established a new permanent endowed scholarship fund to help students jump start their college educations.

The new endowment will create a permanent funding source for scholarships to full-time students pursuing a four year degree in biological sciences, ecology, forestry, or related sciences attending any of the college’s campuses.

This investment in scholarships can promote academic achievement at the college and make it possible for students to continue their academic pursuit.

The Kerncrest Audubon Society is an educational organization which promotes the protection of wildlife, especially birds, and works to conserve wildlife habitat.

The Kerncrest Audubon Meade Scholarship was made possible because of the generous gift made by Bob and Bernice Meade, long-time residents of the Indian Wells Valley, avid birders, and active advocates for wildlife.

Established in 1977, the CCCC Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that supports student and economic growth and vitality of the communities it serves by providing well-educated human resources for local business and industry. The Foundation awarded more than $170,000 in scholarships to Cerro Coso students over the past two years to ensure financial accessibility to higher education.  More information on the CCCC Foundation is available at www.cerrocoso.edu/foundation

Students only need to complete one general application at the college and student information is automatically matched with more than 50 scholarship opportunities available through the CCCC Foundation.

Director of Institutional Advancement Natalie Dorrell said, “it is exciting that organization’s like the Kerncrest Audubon Society recognizes the value of a college education and its importance to families, our communities, and the region.  We are indeed grateful to them and their decision to establish this scholarship that helps provide families with a pathway to college and will yield positive results for generations to come.”

For more information about scholarship opportunities or to establish a fund, contact the CCCC Foundation at 760-384-6260 or visit www.cerrocoso.edu/foundation .
